Paul Mitchell's son Angus' cause of death at 53 is finally revealed (2024)

The cause of death of Angus Mitchell has been revealed more than five months later.

Angus, who was the son of the famous hairstylist and John Paul Mitchell Systems co-founder, was found dead on the morning of January 3, 2024, when his body was discovered at the bottom of his poolat his home in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Angus, who was a co-owner of the John Paul Mitchell Systems haircare empire that his late father had co-founded, was determined to have died of accidental drowning, according to the medical examiner's report obtained by TMZ.

He was 53, the same age his father Paul was when he died in 1989 from pancreatic cancer.

The publication also obtained the police report into the circ*mstances leading up to Angus' death, which paints a picture of a totally normal evening spent with friends just before his shocking death.

In fact, Angus had been posting photos from the shindig to social media the night before his body was found, suggesting that he was having a good time and was in high spirits.

According to the police report, witnesses said the entrepreneur had some of his friends over to his Honolulu home on the night of January 2.

Police interviewed the friends Angus had been partying with the night before his death, and they reported last seeing him as he headed out to his pool area by himself, though it's unclear if it was obvious that he planned to go swimming.

However, those interviewed indicated that he didn't appear to be under the influence of drugs when he headed toward the pool, and they didn't notice anything odd about his demeanor.

They said he wasn't known to be on any medications that might have played a part in his death, and the guests on his final night thought he was fairly healthy and fit.

However, witnesses did say that he had been drinking that night, though they didn't indicate that they found it to be a concerning amount of alcohol.

Although the medical examiner's report says Angus died of accidental drowning, it reportedly doesn't include references to a toxicology report.

However, TMZ notes that the report has been heavily redacted, though it's not known why the redactions were made or what information they may obscure.

Even though there is now clarity about how Angus died, what led up to his untimely death doesn't appear to be known.

Footage from his security camera system shows Angus heading out to his pool alone and apparently getting into it, according to still images included in the reports.

It's unclear if any of his friends were still at his home at the time of his death, or when they left.

However, it was early the following morning that his body was discovered. On January 3, a driver who was supposed to be picking Angus up arrived at his home to take him to the airport.

After Angus didn't appear, the driver checked around the house, which is when he spotted his body at the bottom of the pool.

According to the police report, the driver dove in to the pool and pulled him out, before calling 911 and attempting CPR.

First responders continued the CPR and used a defibrillator in hopes of reviving Angus, but to no avail, and he was then declared dead at the scene.

Following his father Paul's death in 1989, Angus had followed his footsteps into the beauty industry by opening his own establishment, the Angus Mitchell Salon, in 2010 in Beverly Hills.

Angus was married to wife Mara Gourdine at his time of death. He had previously been married to Michelle Raab, and before thatSian, with whom he shared his son Dylan.

On his final Instagram post from three days before he was found dead, he posed in a family shot with his mother Jolina Mitchell, his wife and his son as he wished his followers a happy new year.

'Who’s ready to wrap 2023 and head into the new year?! Cheers to 2024 from my family to yours #nye #celebration #kobeyear,' he captioned the post.

A number of people chimed in with condolences in the comment section in the wake of his death.

One person said, 'Rest In Peace Angus. Thoughts and prayers with his loved ones.'

He changed his name to Paul Mitchell — a nickname from his boss — when he began working at the Mayfair salon The Park Lane.

Paul would go on to work with the late hair-care icon Vidal Sassoon, who said of his then-apprentice: 'He had great style. He had something terribly special. He could inspire people.'

Paul would go on to work at Crimpers Salon at the New York City–based department store Bendel’s, according to the biography.

In 1970, he and his wife welcomed Angus, and in 1971, he formed a friendship with the businessman John Paul DeJoria, with whom he would subsequently form a lucrative business partnership.
