Following the contentious conclusion of season two, fans are begging for answers about the next chapter of Team Black and Team Green’s rivalry. While the ending may have been disappointing for some fans, we have good news – House of the Dragon is confirmed to be returning for a third season.
Sharing the news in a post-finale featurette, House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal teased that the upcoming season will be “about total war.”
“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivalled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three,” shared HBO’s Programming Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi.
As Game of Thrones fans continue to pontificate about the latest Targaryen plot twist, we round up everything we know so far about House of the Dragon season three.

How many seasons of House of the Dragon will there be?
Just when we thought news of a new season couldn’t get any better, Condal shared in a post-finale press conference that House of the Dragon will run for at least four seasons.
Prior to his most recent comments, the series creator revealed that he and author George R.R. Martin had previously planned to expand the story over four seasons, writing to his blog in 2022, “It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons [book], from start to finish.”
When will season three of House of the Dragon premiere?
While we don’t yet have an exact premiere date for House of the Dragon season three, Condal provided a rough estimate for the story’s upcoming chapter.
“We will be starting prep in the fall and we should be in production again in early-ish 2025,” he said.
What is House of the Dragon Season 3 about?
Warning: Spoilers ahead!
While House of the Dragon season two saw Rhaenyra command seven adult dragons and Daemon pledge his allegiance to her rule, fans of the book series were disappointed to not see the Battle of Gullet take centre stage in the finale.
The battle, which takes place between Arbor and Westeros, sees an epic showdown between Rhaenyra and her brother half-brother Aegon II’s loyal forces, with Aegon leaving the battlefield victorious.

Despite being the epic cliffhanger for a finale, series creator Ryan Condal shared that the writers were “trying to give [the Battle of Gullet] the time and the space that it deserves,” with the decision to omit it from season two coming largely down to the pacing of the series.
Teasing the upcoming drama, Condal shared, “I think in season 3, you do start to see things boil over from here to the end of the war. As always with this show, there’s going to be giant moments of spectacle but also real moments of surprise and character nuance that we’re very much looking forward to. Some of my favourite moments in the book, just as a reader, that I’m excited to adapt as a dramatist, are yet to come in the story.”
